Brunei students perform in UK

Last weekend, Bruneian students from all over the UK were seen flocking to the Sherfield building of Imperial College London to witness a play by Bruneian students based in London entitled 'Kasih Ibu' or in English 'Mother's Love'.

The event was organised by ICUBS (Imperial College Union Bruneian Society) in collaboration with the BSUnion (Brunei Students' Union). It was also supported by Imperial College Union, Brunei Students Unit, Brunei Shell and Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

The guest of honour was Pg Dato Paduka Hj Maidin bin Pg Hj Hashim, High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Also present was Abdullah bin Hj Ahad, the Director of Studies of the Brunei Students Unit in the UK.

The play portrayed a teenager, Daniel (played by Azeem Putra Abdul Wahab), who dreamed of studying abroad and hoped to someday help his widowed mother Zaitun (played by Siti Nur'arifah Suhaimi) run the family business.

It became a reality when he received a letter from his dream college, granting him a place in the prestigious Imperial College London. Daniel left his home country, Brunei, to study in the UK. Little did he know of the trials and tribulations that awaited him in the big world. It was a world of lies, deception, seduction and ultimately, betrayal.

The story entailed a driven, innocent young man who left his mother with promises of a better future, only to be met with social dilemmas and boundless struggles of university life. Ultimately led him to the greatest question of his life, where his heart truly really lies. In his endeavours, he met Nisa (played by Dk Nur Nadiaty bte Pg Luba), and she totally changed his life.

Other performances in the play included traditional dances, urban dances, singing performances and a special guest performance by BruSoton (Brunei Student Society in Southampton).

To further enliven the event, a lucky draw presentation was held. Prizes included gift vouchers from Marks & Spencer, Top Shop, Selfridges and the grand prize was a 8gb iPod Touch.

The play was directed by Yazid Yakub and Haadi Amdani, who never had any experience before.

That was their first time directing a play. They were proud of themselves after all the hard work and preparation.

It took them roughly three months to get everything sorted out, which included auditions for casts, choreographing dance moves and preparing the costumes. They hoped everyone who attended the event enjoyed the play as much as they did.

What are night sweats?
Night sweats or hyperhydrosis is a condition that occurs in the middle of the night or at any time you are sleeping. People suffering from night sweats wake up from deep sleep feeling extremely cold or hot, clammy and sweating excessively. Night sweats can be annoying as they disrupt sleep and often lead to insomnia and stress.

Causes:

Idiopathic Hyperhydrosis - this is a condition where the body sweats excessively without there being any known medical condition.

Infections - people suffering from infections are prone to night sweats. The most common infection leading to night sweats is tuberculosis. But bacterial infections are also a cause for night sweats, these infections could be endocarditic, osteomyelitis and some times HIV infection or the AIDS virus.

Cancers - night sweats are one of the first symptoms of cancers especially lymphoma.

Medications - a combination of certain medications and certain conditions like tumor or infections can lead to night sweats. Antidepressants are the most common cause of night sweats. Other drugs that cause night sweats are niacin, tamoxifen, hydralazine, nitroglycerine, sildenafil which is Viagra. Other drugs are cortisone medications like prednisone and prednisolone that can cause night sweats.

Hypoglycemia - hypoglycemia is a condition where people suffer from low blood glucose levels. To control the insulin and glucose levels in the body, people who are hypoglycemic need to take insulin shots or oral medication that can cause night sweats.

Hormone disorders - those suffering from hormonal disorders such as pheochromococytoma, cancinoid syndrome or hyperthyroidism are prone to flushes and night sweats.

Neurological conditions - those suffering from neurological conditions like autonomic dysreflexia, post traumatic, syringomyelia, stroke and neuropathy are prone to night sweats, and they can also be caused by the medications taken to control these conditions.

Update on 3M Work~

hey guys, this blog seems so dead. havent updated it for 2 months? alright anyways, life has been so so. nothing major happenings other than the 3rd year workload.

theres the literature research project which is now done but was a tough thing to start off with. my topic was "Problems and Solutions of Carbon Nanotubes". Completed the report in within 4 weeks of reading references and typing up a summary of the findings.

Next, there is the DMT (design manufacture test) project which consists of 5 members working together to design, manufacture and test an engineering system or components. I was involved in Imperial Racing which is incharge of designing and building a car from scratch.
My group is incharge of the suspension, with our topic as "3M Suspension".
We're incharge of designing and building the wishbones, apexes, clevis joints.
We will be outsourcing the brackets with the chassis group.
Spherical bearings will be bought n used in our design.
The innovative carbon fibre tubes will be used in our suspension design instead of steel tubes.

The group consists of:

Ming - Team Principal

Me - Manufacturing Manager

Poh Shen - Technical Director

Lilian - Design Executive

Joel - Procurement Coordinator

We even have titles for each person in the group.

Before the xmas break, i had to manufacture the test piece for the carbon fibre tubes to join through adhesive.

hey guys, its been a while since i last blogged. Yet again, blame it on my laziness n the happening london im in! :D i suffered at least a good week without internet, feeling so detached to my brunei life n lively stories. call me an internet addict for all i care! haha. a few pictures to reflect on. not gna upload the whole lot as it will take me ages!

Landed in uk at around 6ish am before taking the cab to my new place. Unloaded the luggages from the storage room (this is one good weightlifting session) and brought it over to the new place with the help of nigel n shee before heading to manchester by virgin train to help shee settle in.

hey guys, im still alive n kicking here in brunei eventhough my blog has seemed to gone into slumber mode. my flight back to uk has been confirmed on the 20th, which is another 12 days! i dont want to go back so early! Brunei, the land of unexpected treasures, might be boring at times but this is where it all happens. the morning brunch, the hanging-outs, the late-nights n the "ONE TIME IT".
hence, i m still waiting fr my flight to be rescheduled to the 28th if possible. is there anyone out there who can help find me a spot on the flight from brunei to uk on the 28th? =D

hey guys.. its been quite long time since i blogged. i have been back in brunei for about 2 weeks now. it has been pretty eventful with a newly wed cousin of mine (congrats man), the many football evening matches we have, all the lim-teh sessions, lunch, dinner, swimming, movies, a car of my own, watching dpmm fc pawn geyland united. nothing beats brunei when it comes to a laid-back, relaxing life. no worries, no commitments, happy-go-lucky. hmmm.. its only been 2 weeks though n this list seems like its going to repeat itself.. luckily im going to a hong kong trip in a week followed by a kl n bangkok trip a day after the HK trip ends. =)

anyways, going out now.. will update if i have the time n m not too tired...

Italy Trip~ Day 3

awaken from the cold waiting room, we rushed into McD's as soon as it opened to get warmth n to use the toilet.

sat on a train from La Spezia towards cinque terra. it was KO time for me, as i slept for the whole journey. bought the tickets to go to enter and explor the national park which cinque terra is reknown for.

Italy Trip~ Day 2

a great sleep for all of us as we get the comfort of staying in the only hotel in this trip. i was one of the last to wake up for breakfast cos i forgot to set my watch 1 hour infront.

anyways, breakfast was free of charge n included in the hotel charge. As hungry boys, we ate till they ran out of food. we also managed to sneakily take some biscuits along with us as well..

this is our last day in venice as we plan to catch a train to cinque terra later today. this trip seems to unfold itself as we plan to travel at the same time, which is quite an experience.

Went to the train station to store our luggages so we wont have to carry them while sightseeing. This means unpacking n repacking our stuff into the big backpacks so we can save money for storage.. students we are!

Visited Piazza San Marco, Basillica San Marco, Ponte Rialto (Rialto Bridge) again as we made our way to Doge's Palace. Awed at the great architecture work.. we spent around 3 hours there before leaving for food and back to the train station to buy our tickets to cinque terra!

the train ride was another unpacking n repacking session as we split the things in the backpacks into seperate bags so the load will be evenly distributed. plans of accomodation for tonight was the big issue on the train ride.

Plan A - stay in the streets as we dont have any accomodation booked.

Plan B - find a hotel/hostel to stay in.

we opted for plan A as it reaps great experience. uni life is about having crazy experiences isnt it? haha dont think i will ever sleep in a train station ever again if my family members find out! the free accomodation in the train station waiting room was real uncomfortable.. but what can u say.. we tried to save 18 euros! its freezing cold all night with the wind blowing into the room at like top speed (okay maybe i was just exaggerating but it felt like that).

there came a point in the night when i was just thinking to myself.. hmm. why is the time going by so slowly? i want to just get to the train n go to cinque terra! at least the train ride is going to be warm! anyways, survived a night in the blistering cold waiting room of italy! something i can write in my book as one of a hell of an experience!

Italy Trip~ Day 1

hey guys, sorry for the slow update on my italy trip as i had to revise for the exams straight after the easter break. i will like to thank caleb n jun sheng for all the photos for this trip :D

woke up at around 2am n got ready for our flight to venice..
Arrived in venice n after much hassle of trying to find the way to the hotel we're staying (thanks to the misleading bus drivers who pushed us here n there to wrong buses), we finally arrived alas, getting to unload those heavy backpacks.

One important thing to do in Venice is to get lost n sure we did get lost here.. no maps, just 6 guys wandering n exploring around venice island. its sure a good experience, walking the whole day n joking around with good company. n something not to forget was the 12 small meals we had, including pizzas (which im pretty sick of now) n gelatos (hmmm, tastes better under the beautiful sunshine we had).

the street is filled with these shops, selling assorted souvenirs which range from masks to postcards n shirts.

on board the gondola. we had a cheap fare here and could bargain with the person as the weather wasnt particularly sunny. if my memory serves me right, it was 10 euros per person.group photo with the gondola guy.

we get the benefit of seeing him with an umbrella n rowing at the same time!

hey guys, its been a while now since my last update. im done with 2nd year now! :D endured the gruelling 8 exams in the 2 weeks schedule of 2M mech eng in imperial. the past 2 weeks have been somewhat hardcore yet fulfilling. i feel like i must have actually 'self-actualise' here.. (haha one of those business terms). hmm anyways.. leave u with a few photos of what i have been up to last 2 weeks..

wouldnt say it has gone very well, as i noticed i did quite a number of mistakes after i got out of the examination room. hmm.. anyways, no time to reflect back on this thought.

i can't concentrate! instead, i have been reading medical stuff online, surfing n browsing random articles to read. i dont know why i'm doing all these instead of studying for the exams. i just cant concentrate as well as anymore.
there also seems to be a spike in the number of posts in blog around this time of the month i notice~ so keep intuned!

hmm.. just thought i should share this with u guys.. for those who dont know what OCD means.

OCD? what does this stand for? Obsessive-compulsive disorder. this is an anxiety mental disorder characterized by involuntary intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours..... (blah blah blah)
In simple words, this is usually used to describe someone who is meticulous, perfectionist, absorbed in a cause, or otherwise fixated on something or someone.

Ok. it's time to check on the roast chicken in the oven! Thats all.

usually, i dont take naps in the afternoon but today is different. due to the lack of concentration, tiredness and boring subjects, i had a 30 minute 'sleep'. hmm.. afternoon naps are quite nice actually.. refreshing!

it must be the symptoms of overstressed hitting in. i presume...
Overstressed leads to several factors:
over-eating (which i'm doing)
forgetfulness (i'm getting this as well.. read n forget)
agitation (yes, u guessed it..)
aggression (those strikes of the RAGER mode).

hmm.. u guys are probably not interested in all these 'sciency' stuff.. i shall stop here.

the 4-week easter break is coming to an end.. how i dread this, for the exams are looming closer n closer n lectures are starting once again. this means waking up at 8am which i will probably find quite hard to do..

Everyday is 'vital'. havent been hitting the gym for a month now n i can feel myself getting unfit..

All the oily pizzas in italy n home-cooked meals we've been having these past few days, the home-made cripsy roast duck, the bah kut teh.. awesome meals that make u feel like a blob of fat at the end. hmm.. lets leave all these worries aside..

time sure do pass by in a flash.. its been 5 years we've gone without u. the thought of this conjures up memorable times we had together. the days when u taught me golf in the driving range with those 'baby' clubs to the time when i started using proper clubs.
the time when u gave me the inspirational talk about electric circuits for my physics homework has been deeply imprinted at the back of my mind, arousing my senses and motivating me to work hard to get a degree in engineering. When asked whether engineering was the right choice for me to pursue, all you would say was 'Do anything that you really enjoy'. And for this, I'm grateful and thankful that u were there for me all the time.

i think i'm going crazy.. this pulsating right eye problem has been hitting me through the days n nights for the past week. no pain.. just bloody annoying.. spastic twitching of the bottom eyelids..

Possible problems...
1 lack of sleep
2 depression
3 stress
4 medical concerns
5 too much caffeine
6 being on the computer for too long
7 eyestrain - keeping your eyes focused at the same distance for long periods of time or working under bright lights or in areas of very high contrast and changing focus often.

i have had a dose of caffeine every now n then.. green tea seems to be the main problem under my speculation.
ohh well.. time to stop the green tea for a bit n see what happens..

im so glad i pulled off 2 individual reports, 1 group report and 1 project poster in a matter of 1 week. The whole of last week has been reports reports reports all day and night. Through my short slumber every night and to be awoken by my phone alarm, i faced another day of report writing in my mind. During tutorials, everyone's on about report..

Group Report - this was a mess in the night before the hand-in date but i m glad the group handled this well and we pulled it off. all the hard work, dedication n frantic towards the end of the term.. including me sending god-knows-how many emails out.. my group members must be seriously pissed off mate!

Original BA KUT TEH recipe!

Decided to cook ba kut teh for lunch one day!

ingredients - spring onion, fried tofu thing, black mushroom, pork leg, ba kut teh packets, salt, soy sauce (dark n light).

PREPARATION

Marinated the pork legs which were cut into bite sizes with soy sauce for one night.

Chop the mushrooms into bite sizes and soak for a few hours until soft.

Chop fried tofu thing into bite sizes as well.

Chop spring onions into fine pieces.

Put water into the pot until it is boiling then add the ba kut teh packet (make sure u do not cut open the packet).

Leave the packet in the pot for a few minutes until smell diffuses out before adding the pork leg and mushroom.

before..

Close the pot with a lid and leave for 45 minutes before adding the fried tofu thing.
Let the ba kut teh simmer for another hour before adding salt and soy sauce (dark n light) to suit ur taste.

after..

To go with the ba kut teh, u can add lettuce in the pot and steam it for a couple of minutes or cook black soy sauce egg!

Manchester Weekend Trip

the weekend trip down to manchester...

On the way to manchester using train..

reached zukri's place, decided to take a break n rest coz we reached at around 10ish pm.

in zuk's place playing singstar.. look at everyone stoning at his huge tv!

the first 'restaurant' we ate in when we reached manchester.. pizza co. fast food..
spicy wings, chips n cheese.. mmm.. i sure do miss the chicken..
met up with hafiz and decided to call it a day. went our different ways...

as for the rest who either had accomodation close to the city centre, i m stayin with hafiz in 'curry mile' ( a street covered in many halal outlets n restaurants). quite a dodgy place..

we had our talks at night, played PES (pro evo) n many other such things..

next morning, went down to the city centre using the 'magic bus'.

had starbucks for breakfast..

went to nobu to celebrate rinni's and my bday with tieng, ming, zukri, yanmin, izzy and fai. food there was awesome!
however, we werent allowed to take photos in nobu.. i managed to snap some though..

Had the Japanese Mojito - it was the bomb!

Whole Lemon Sole Kare Age (lightly fried buttered snow fish with a tince of lemon and vinegar sauce to go with it) with rice for a main course - this was awesome as the fish was tender and it wasn't so deeply fried.

After Hatchi (mint brulee with shisho ice cream and frozen chocolate) - this dessert is a little weird to me. shisho ice cream tastes like bubble-gum?

after my trip there, recommended dishes to try in NOBU would be:

Japanese Mojito - a cooling drink with a splash of club soda, sprite and shochu (brewed rice wine) along with freshly muddled mint and cucumber.

the famous black cod den miso (the buttered cod splattered unselfishly with teriyaki sauce) - apparently the den miso sauce is made of sake (wine), sugar and mirin (a sweet rice wine) and of course white miso.
the super dam nice tenderloin of beef with teriyaki sauce (the softest and most tender thing u will ever eat out of a grill) - the beef is made to be well-done but turns feels like its been cook med-rare. the after taste is amazing as well, no blood on the plate. just a nice solid piece of beef nicely cut for u..
Chocolate Bento Box (a nice hot filling pudding of chocolate along with a scoop of a green tea ice cream presented in a bento box) - just the dessert to finish off ur NOBU experience!

Kabuki (a play of coffee and chocolate ice cream with airy honeycomb waffles dipped in an unselfish amount of chocolate sauce)

the price of the food turned out to be okay for the good service and legendary food (around 70 pounds)

Wonderful dinner with a good company~ just a way to kick-start the jolly week!

The Queen's Tower is situated in the South Kensington campus of Imperial College, London, England. It is 287 feet tall with a copper covered dome at its top. To reach the base of the dome from the ground on foot, one must ascend a series of narrow spiral staircases, which comprise 324 steps in total.

The Tower used to be the central tower of the Imperial Institute, and is now its sole remaining building. The Institute was founded on Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887, and its demolition began in 1957. In 1966, the tower was repaired to enable it to stand on its own. There are also two stone lions at the foot of the tower, which were once set at the entrance to the Imperial Institute.

There are ten bells hung for change ringing in the belfry of the tower, about two thirds of the way up. These bells, known collectively as the Alexandra Peal, were a gift from Mrs Elizabeth M. However, i got to go up there today! imperial opened the queens tower and ran 30 minute slots where tours were given during lunch for the whole week. the tour was at a cost of 3 pounds per person...
with hundreds of spiral stairs in such narrow pathways and the strong stale scent of dust, pohshen, ming, tieng n i set our journey out to the top!

the snow was so thick that cars were stuck in them as they struggle to come to a halt when the red light on the traffic light was shown. Look at the porsche.. hahaha

Woke up early next morning (having only 4 hours of sleep coz of 'angela') n to be met by more white snow... i walked to college.

On arrival, i only noticed that lectures were cancelled.. by this time, i was so fumed up n annoyed at myself =/ i got several emails from the director of courses n yet i didnt check them before leaving the house..

Dear students, Congratulations to those of you who made it in. Because weather conditions are likely to deteriorate, classes this afternoon are CANCELLED. Tutorials this morning will be provided by those staff who have managed to make it. The SPAP lecture will NOT run.

Met up with chai.. malaysian engineer i met in the MSoc ski trip. Had dinner in 'The Polo', a korean restaurant. very nice food. awesome~

(dont know what the round crab thing is called) n last but not least 2 plates of fried vege (carrots, brocolli, cauliflower) with a pinch of oyster n mushroom sauce

i was aroused from my deep slumber by the bringing sound of my alarm on my phone as the song, "in the ayer" by flo-rida was being played. had my usual breakfast quickly before going to campus for a long, tiring day.. a bowl of muesli with milk. soon, i was off.. walking along the familiar path which lead to yet another familiar place.. room 220 where my lectures commenced.

time went past so slowly at the lectures today that i dozed off at maths n stress analysis. the feeling of being on holiday was still stuck in me.. i ain't use to waking up at 8:15am.
After lunch, i had a dreadful thermodynamics lab which involves working with an air conditioning unit. the process was so long-winded and boring but by no means is it easy at all. Finished at 5:30pm when the actual lab was scheduled until 5pm only.. =/

Alas, i get to go home after such a long day on campus.. to get home n be met by the 5 at 4 n dinner served was an awesome feeling~ curry chicken with rice n boiled carrots n fried eggs.

the clock soon struck 7pm... i need to go to leicester square to catch the ZORRO musical!

GAZA PROTEST MARCH!!

as i entered trevor roy's salon located in high street ken for my hair-cut which i had longed for because my hair was really annoying me, i was met with this huge crowd of people doing the so-called gaza protest march! there was at least 45 minutes of solid protesting as my hair was being cut for a cheap price of 10 pounds!

apparently it looks like it was planned as i see the police stationed at places where the march was disallowed.

MSoc Ski Trip to La Plagne 1800

After a gruelling 22 hours of sitting in the coach n ferry, i finally reached my getaway place. a place where i feel so free.. a place where i can let all my troubles flow out.. n a place where my winter break begins! here it goes.. Enter La Plagne 1800.....

The view of the area is amazing... with such tranquil serene vicinity, breath-taking sights n definitely fresh air which i long for.. a total opposite of life in london..

Quickly did we unpack our belongings, we rushed down for a small lunch before heading for the ski equipment!

Alas, after around an hour of queueing up for the equipment, its time to try them on...

Without any skiing lessons, i as an adventrous being decided to go to a beginner slope (green slope) which to my first impression wasn't that steep. unfornately, i guess i was wrong.. i couldn't handle this simple slope. the speed of going down this slope was tremendous, i sped up.. reached the end which was a small cliff of around 2metres tall n jumped off. The result being......

me with a red bruise on my head.. i went face flat into the snow as i jumped off the cliff. not a good start to skiing ey?

Thin-crust pizza

Medium weld juicy steak with fries n salad. apparently, its suppose to be well-done but the french always make their steak red on the inside =/

"Diots" (pork sausages) with red wine, melted onions and polenta (cheese). this dish is awesome. one of the regional specialities.

"Pormoniers" (a different kind of pork sausage) with honey gravy and "brozets" with mushrooms. this dish in my opinion is by far the best one n a must try next time i go there!

hey guys, i m finally free! FREE FROM WORRIES! well at least on the studying side of my life! no more sitting in lectures, reading notes n attempting tutorial sheets for a good solid 2 weeks! anyways, had a few visitors over at my place these couple of days, as the term comes to an end.. n the holidays begin!

time flies so fast.. my autumn term is nearing an end n i have completed 6 progress tests n 1 project within that time. however, theres more to come as i will face 2 more tests this week before i get my deserved break which i long for.. a SKI TRIP to LA PLAGNE, France!

however, i m starting to contemplate my life in uk.. having this constant feeling that i need more time to do more things... time is precious.. u must treasure it~ i want to do more things.. i want to have a hell of an experience during my uni life.. but u see, if theres only a time machine which can slow down time.. if only......

Finally completed my pump project drawing assignment! i m so relieved that we actually made it on time for the tight deadline. this may be over but there is definitely more to come.. the manufacturing, poster design, testing n report writing. on top of that, all the other labs n work.. ohh dear~ 2nd year is sure a toughie!

ohh yea, i forgot to mention that chia was staying at my place for a couple of days for interviews at 2 unis.. hope that she did well.. anyways, i shall not dwell on minor details so let the pictures be shown..

my whole body is aching now.. hit the gym on tuesday then went for muay thai on wednesday. its a full body workout. went through proper techniques of jabs, crosses, hooks, uppercuts n kicks.. punching techniques are okay but the kicks are a tad weird.. i cant seem to rotate my hip while rotating on the balls of my feet to do a proper kick with my shin. ohh well, hope my kicks get better over time.. anyways....

i have been spending most of my days on the pump project which is due tomorrow. finally, i have finished the drawings n assembly with my group mates.. (fingers crossed, hopefully there aren't any mistakes). got back home at around 9:15pm (latest i have stayed in college to do work) before whooping down my dinner of rice with dry chilli chicken n carrots. i really do hope there aren't more of these days to come.. i need a break!

i pratically did nothing enjoyable this weekend.. pretty sad to say especially when i have been working my butt off for the couple of days. going to college on a sunday from 1:30 to around 7:30pm, doing the pump project which is due this friday. the workload is killing me.. but hopefully i can make it on time for the due date. well.. by hook or by crook, i need to complete the engineering drawings by tomorrow.

Went to my first musical in london today.. apparently this musical is new as well..
Went to the new london theatre located in drury lane in convent garden with nigel to watch...

Set in poland in 1942 where freedom was found through imagination, where hope and laughter could conquer fear and where love knew no boundaries... presenting... Imagine This

i enjoyed it very much eventhough i was sitting in the very front row facing the casts.. meaning that i have to keep turning my head around to see who was talking/singing. i noticed that the performers had saliva flying out from their mouth while singing as well.. The plot was realistic, reflecting on life which i found very meaningful. Awesome stuff~ watching musicals makes me happy! :D i want to watch more! especially when i m only paying 3 pounds for the tickets!
